Short answer: No. There is no scientific evidence that using ChatGPT causes dementia.
Why?
Dementia is caused by brain disease, not by using tools.
Common causes:
Alzheimer’s disease
Vascular damage (strokes, hypertension)
Lewy body disease
Frontotemporal degeneration
Using cognitive tools does not damage neurons.
The brain does not “wear out” from thinking less. Dementia results from:
Protein accumulation (amyloid, tau)
Neurodegeneration
Reduced blood supply
Genetic and metabolic factors
What about “mental laziness”?
Over-reliance on tools may reduce active recall practice (like not memorizing numbers anymore), but:
That does not equal neurodegeneration.
It may affect skill sharpness, not brain cell loss.
Evidence so far (2026 knowledge):
No clinical studies show AI usage increases dementia risk.
Cognitive stimulation (including reading, problem solving, discussion) generally supports brain health.
Important distinction
Skill decline from not practicing → reversible.
Dementia → progressive brain disease with structural damage.
They are not the same.
