as far as waymo safety is concerned:
imho, we should be incredibly skeptical that current safety trends would be maintained. safety has always required, by tradition, workers on the front lines fighting against changes that make work less safe. waymo will never have that
their only incentive for making the cars safe is to get in the door as far as regulators and consumer confidence are concerned. once they are in the door, that incentive goes away and they are likely to start compromising on all of the expensive technology required to keep the cars safe
that's not even hypothetical - we've seen this repeatedly happen with self-driving deployments from different companies. cars start out really safe, they get approval from people, then the companies start stripping-out sensors and cheaping out on the type of sensor technology they use, resulting in less safe cars and fatal collisions
