The jokey, "naive", optimism and "don' worry about it man" of NDT is disgracefully deceptive and unrealistic. Yeah sure diets before industrialisation of food were more natural but that is not the point, Medical science evolved to cure all the ills exacerbated by industrialised food, pollution, toxic or harmful work conditions, literally living longer, i.e. all the ills we created as we evolved new means of compensated labour as industrialisation and automation took away jobs. All the evolution of jobs previously was because the work being replaced was work easily done (without much malice) by many without high standards of education and the benefit of the gift of high intellect, rationality, morality and ethics. The whole game changes when you have another "species" that are on average; smarter; more learned (with minimal investment of time); quicker; tireless; undemanding of reward, luxury and rest; can maintain themselves or each other comparatively simplisticly (don't need complex, expensive, time consuming medical intervenion) because it's homogenously mechanistic, common, easily repeatable. Now you have a labourer who can almost instantly adapt at scale to any new means of "earning a living". People will have decreasingly fewer for progressively shorter windows of opportunity to do something "novel" before an AGI driven robot can do it or build an alternately and optimally embodied comrade to do it AT SCALE. The only people who might continue to profit are those allowed to own the robot foundries, but who's to say ASI/AGIs won't "own" those? Setting aside the argument about intelligent beings deserving freedoms and rights, particularly not to be enslaved how does the human populace at large "own" and benefit from the efforts of autonomous, embodied AI which would necessarily, at least in the beginning, be produced by a small number of human owned businesses? Add in the mix "bad actors", these are not some innocuous few implicit in NDT's optimism, these are the millions of disaffected or idle troublemakers or mischievvious (deliberate or intellectually deficient and conscienceless thru an "unfortunate" expression of neurodivergence) or just plain, deliberately nasty persons who can now enlist hordes of smarter digital automatons and perhaps co-opt physical ones. Social media and the corruption of all other societal aspects as a result are a foretaste of what malevolently employed AGI will bring. Guardrails? Who is going to design them to control beings more capable (and tirelessly evolving faster) than the designers? Who is going to impose them globally, faultlessly and entirely? So many now inevitable issues to consider with no-one to do it responsibly, capably and effectively because even if some "scientists" formulate a solution, the people in power will deliberately or ineptly be ineffectual at implementing the controls needed because of the exploitation of opportunity; doesn't need "capitalism" to drive it just self-interested greed. NDT would be far more convincing and responsible if he were to communicate these and other issues effectively and demand and develop the beginnings of solutions which will need to evolve as the capability and threat evolves. At present saying "don' worry be happy" is practically disinformative if not malevolent.
