We don't stop with AI because its the next technological step. Nations that don't adapt will die out like any other country/kingdom did in the past that didn't adapt. Also the benefits in science are huge and improve the lives of everyone. Stopping now would guarantee that the nations that do so become irrelevant and also die out but slowly over time. The only way forward is acceleration.
