I think the answer is yes, ai can become sentient. Brains are just biological computers that always taking in input and putting out output. So understanding our brain should lead to a better understanding of how we should program the ai.
In addition, I think that making ai more human-like is not the way to progress because ai would be it own thing - a new intelligent species. I think that it should coexist with humans instead of something that only mimic and serve humans.
