I think you can use AI to create art just as much as you can use photography to create art. Sure, the basics seems simple: write a prompt. Or point a camera and click. But just because most photographs aren't art, doesn't mean some aren't. And the same is true for AI art. Some artists spend hundreds of hours on refining their AI-generated/assisted art piece. And that shows. It's incomparable to what someone gets from putting next to no thought into a prompt. I don't think it should be dismissed just because of the tools used. Getting the most out of any tool requires a lot of practice, even if it's AI. Heck, even getting the most out of other people requires a lot of work. Great film-directors or orchestra conductors don't grow on trees either. What they do is still art, even though it depends on the art produced by others. The other thing is, that while it would certainly be great to develop as a writer or artist. There are hundreds of alternate skills that are also worth developing. Like music, or cooking, or sewing, learning other languages, programming, mathematics, sports, parenting, flipping water bottles so they land on their bottom. (Well, they can't all be winners.) It takes 10 thousand hours to become an expert in something, and humans lives are rather limited in length. So, sure, I would love to be a great writer or artist. Or even merely good, or just okay. But I don't have the time to dedicate that (even aside from suspecting I have some severe handicaps that would prevent me from developing as a writer even if I did put in that time). But at the same time, there are stories I'd like to be told that no one else is telling. So if AI could help me out there, then I'd certainly be amenable to that. Whether it'll ever be good enough for that purpose remains to be seen, but it's more likely than that I'll be able to afford a real author to help me out.
