Computer science grad here. Wall of text incoming. First of all I absolutely love your art and I've been following your channel for a very long time. Having your art taken and fed into AI models without your consent is pretty damn annoying and I'm not a very big fan of that either. Sadly though, the reality is that even if you "poison" your own artist tag with art that's very different from your own style, it will still be just as easy to create a so called Lora (or Lycoris) from just a few images of your artstyle (or any style for that matter) in order to reproduce it. It basically acts as a "sub-module", which can be combined with any pre-existing model, in order to achieve results similar to what said sub-module contains. I may sound a bit pro AI and of course I'm quite biased due to my background, but I just really like to show a different angle. Generative AI is an upward battle that can't really be won, given how it can already run (and be trained) locally on very consumer friendly hardware, making it basically impossible to protect your intellectual property, due to the fact that the basis of the dataset can't exactly be proven, because of the training process utilizing random noise. HOWEVER, I do think that it's very important to protect artists in terms of "paid" models, like NovelAI and DALL-E. Given that large datasets are mostly datacrawled/scraped (i.E take every image from XY), your approach "somewhat" works, but not to a degree to where it would ever show, due to being able to be combined with negative biases and weights. It will allow people to easily filter out the unwanted bits. I really don't want for any of this to sound condescending or demotivating, I'm just sad that a once cool technology that many artists could benefit from resulted in what it is today, due to people always wanting to profit from as least effort as possible. Just like how NFTs could've been a great way to protect and to "copyright" intellectual property for artists, it also turned into an absolute hellhole of scams and immorality. (Don't get me wrong, I'm very anti-NFT and anti-crypto, while we're at it) I guess my bottom line is that I hate to see artists, put their efforts and passion towards actively fighting technology instead of considering utilizing it in a way that benefits them or their workflow in a constructive and non-toxic way. (Large) companies that monetize AI models (or straight up AI works) should very much be sued to the ground when it comes to scraping and we desperately do need to find a baseline of morals when it comes to all of this stuff. I can see and understand both sides quite well, given that I'm good friends with a lot of artists too, due to decades of game development. As naïve as it sounds, I would just love to see a middle ground in where this technology and art as a whole can coexist in peace, but as long as there's "easy", low effort bucks out there, there's always people without morals who will try to "earn" them. The main way to fight any of this (in my opinion) is by raising awareness of what it can and can't do, as well as which kinds of artefacts pure "AI works" contain, in order for people to figure out what's "real" and what isn't. Furthermore I do strongly believe that important art-portfolio services like artstation should at the very least reliably flag AI art as such (Which again, will prove to be quite problematic, but one can dream). I truly do hope that nightshade can at the very least somewhat assist in creating more, detectable artefacts, but in the same vein I'm fairly certain that it won't - But I'm just another random goober on the internet with a silly opinion. It's certainly worth a shot! All of that being said, and to finally find an end to this wall of text, if you're an artist (or striving to be one), pleaase please very please don't be discouraged by AI. Keep doing what you love, keep creating! Because in the end, AI may be good at generating art, but it is absolutely terrible at conceptualizing original content. Stop comparing yourself to something that's not worth being compared to. People who are in it for the quick bucks lack the most important thing, which is passion. 💙
