Here it is as I see it...driving kills tens of thousands of people each year. Self driving cars will not change that. But we are WAY more freaked out by tens of thousands of people killed by "computers" than we are by the same number of people killed by people.
We do have a way of reducing transit deaths on a huge scale. Mass transit. Planes and trains are many of orders of magnitude safer than cars, self driving or otherwise.
