AI needs fresh talent to imitate so humans will always be in demand to break into new territory. Towards that end the AI will keep the artists alive in pods and feed them a nutrient solution that keeps them functioning while milking them of their original ideas so that it can train its neutral networks and assimilate their style. They were the lucky ones because the AI deemed them useful.
