Well... calling a photographer an artist is a bit 🤔 sure, you need to know your equipment and you need the experience, visual sense and patience to take that 1 great photo out of 1000. But comparing a photographer to a painter is a bit same thing than comparing an AI "artist" to a photographerer imho.
