A lot of people have a lot of opinions on UBI, but very few have lived it. I did through Andrew in his 2019 campaign. I received $1000 a month from July 2019 until July 2020 because I dropped everything in my life when my mom was diagnosed with cancer, so that I could help her. I was a near full time caregiver for 8 years and 3 months. The last two years was more than full time. Her and I went broke together twice, and was well on our way to a third time when she passed. You don't need to be an economist to know, having more money...doesn't suck. Most of our UBI money went to our medical travels and medications. The first big cold snap that winter, our furnace went out. Something that would have been a huge stress was manageable. I had sold all my instruments much prior to getting the Freedom Dividend, so I used a little of it to buy a $400 guitar (on a payment plan) to try and get my passion for music back, and somehow that became a big part of the story, but I know why now. The biggest factor I learned was this: The country wrongfully worships grind culture and half the country fights progress. We give up time from things that matter to work jobs we hate that pay poorly and then still take on more work, we brag about how many hours we work, but we never deal with the time away from family until the kids are grown up and/or the parents are dead. Somehow, in the grind culture, most people are still broke and using this weeks paycheck to pay last months bills and never getting ahead. A person can only do that for so long before they feel hopeless. You work and work and still you are paying last months bills with this months check at best with no huge breakthrough in sight. You become hopeless, Some give up. Stress, anxiety, depression kick in. If a person has cancer, as my mom did, they don't need those stress hormones feeding the cancer cells. If a person just feels exhausted and depressed as I sometimes did as a full time uncompensated caregiver, the love you feel for your parent is never greater than when they need and depend on you, but you don't love the life you are handed if your entire life is just a battle to simply survive. That's not living. Some would and do check out of life. The UBI gave me, gave us, just a little hope. We knew we always had something coming in to add onto what I could earn when I was able to get away for my work. We knew we would mostly be okay, or at least a lot closer to okay. That was only $1000 between two people under terrible conditions. Now, imagine two people having it that are relatively healthy and working. That is not only capitalism that doesn't start at zero, that is HOPE. Billionaire are using YOUR data to create AI to take YOUR jobs. YOU deserve some of that money back. AI isn't going away, so we may as well embrace it, let it do some of the work, let it pay us. Maybe we can get back to living. Get to know your kids, help your parents, make some music or art. Maybe if we were able to enjoy life a little more people could be people again, instead of enemies. Most people will use the money responsibly. Yes, a few will drink or smoke it away. But most people want to fix their lives, not just numb the pain.
