Of course self driving taxis are cheaper. No cost of the driver. Insurance, probably a bulk policy that covers an entire fleet and access to secondary insurance at volume rates. Maintenance costs yes but don’t pay a third party profit unlike the indy gig worker OR SD taxi company can guarantee a continuous volume to a third party (or OEM) and get a better rate. And, payments to driver are a business expense and are a “write-off” (reduces net income) but the cost of the vehicle for SD Taxi is also a write-off as capital asset depreciation; generally, this means if there is net revenue some of it isn’t taxable but is in the bank account.
Public transit has the disadvantage versus individual owner-operated cars in that drivers & conductors often incur costs beyond wages - benefits such unemployment comp, disability, retirement, health plans, …
The individual owner foots all these.
