I am not a proponent of LLMs and their ilk. I feel like I need to say that right out of the gate, because I have a question about the ethical stance against AI. Consider The Avalanches; a musical group whose biggest hit ("Frontier Psychiatrist") was comprised of sound pulled from roughly a hundred different sources, and not a single note recorded by the band itself. What separates remix culture, which has itself been accused of the same kind of plagiarism that amalgamated algorithmically-generated "art" has, from that selfsame "art"? If the answer is just that a tool was used to automate the task, I'm not sure we've got a leg to stand on, ethically speaking. That said, we already have a way to use prompts to generate art. It's called "commission." If we allow that amal-algo-gen images are art, the people writing the prompts aren't the artists, Midjourney and the like are.
