I think there’s a big difference being missed here.
Using AI as a replacement for thinking vs using it as a thinking partner are not the same thing.
When I use ChatGPT, I don’t hand it the wheel — I interrogate it. I challenge it, ask for counter-arguments, patterns, summaries, reframes, and then decide what I agree or disagree with. It actually forces me to think more clearly, not less.
If someone uses AI to avoid effort, yeah — that’s mental atrophy. Same as GPS replacing navigation skills or calculators replacing math sense.
But used deliberately, it’s closer to a Socratic dialogue than a shortcut. The danger isn’t AI — it’s passive use.
Tools don’t make us lazy. How we use them does.
