I'm not so concerned about this issue or about AI and robotics generally. These systems require a huge, complex technological infrastructure, and this will collapse in the Great Crash of the 2040s. And when I say 2040s I'm being a bit optimistic. Climate change is getting worse exponentially, not arithmetically, and the BRICS are finally getting their act together and building a widely accessible alternative to the US dollar. At some point there will be, as Lenin said, weeks when decades happen. When the dollar and the seawalls collapse, the USA and its imperial provinces in Europe and elsewhere will lose the last twenty years (at least!) of technological development and social progress. Robotics and AI will be maintained and further developed in China and its de facto client states, and the Chinese will not even think about according anything like personhood to machines. Also, the Chinese ruling class will not tolerate the development of anything it might not be able to control. There will be no robot/AI rebellion or takeover.
