I'm currently 72 and lost my job to Voice Recognition (so AI) back in 2012. Working as a medical transcriptionist and my dept bought the VR program and within months replaced 80 typists with it; I survived on a buyout and savings for a few years until I took SS. But here's what I want to suggest to anyone young and struggling - find a senior citizen with a paid-for home and an extra room who needs help at home; errands, yardwork, even a certain amount of companionship; trade housing and utilities, your two biggest expenses, for whatever the senior needs and make sure your personalities are compatible. Hopefully someone introverted who reads all day/keeps themselves mentally occupied and not a chatterbox unless that's your style too. You can still look for work or work full or part time and provide what they need in trade for the roof over your head. I fell into a 'job' like this (maybe you get paid for your time, maybe not) with an elderly man who was an absolute delight and became my best friend ever. I saved enough in four years to buy a modest house for cash and now *I'm* the senior citizen and at some point I'll need help around the house in trade for a room, etc. There's millions of seniors who don't want to go into assisted living (no spots anyways) and not nearly enough home health aides or hired companions to go around. Make the need work for you. Will it change your 'social life'? Yes, perhaps for the better. That senior citizen knows people, has relatives you'll meet, etc. Your future love partner may very well be in their circle of acquaintances. And you'll be surprised what you can learn from someone who lived through the Vietnam era, just like I was surprised what I learned from a man who lived through the early age of flight, the Depression and then WWII.
