Planned obsolescence already exists as one solution to the diminishing customer base. Making a product too good is bad for your bottom line, since you don't have repeat customers. So they make barely functional goods that are guaranteed to break just after the warranty period expires. On the whole, mass consumerism has been bad for the planet, because you fill landfills with crappy waste goods.
Offshoring means you now compete for wages with other workers in the lowest wage country. This has led to the death of manufacturing jobs and shift into service jobs.
And now, AI is coming for the meaningless busywork that all the middle-class jobs were doing. When you don't have workers to manage, you don't need managers. Unproductive workers will be cut. And Amazon Fulfillment is the end-result, you end up working for a machine who will fire you at the first sign of slacking.
