Every programmer knows that the difficult part is not getting your software to work, but to build it in a way that is scalable and robust. Software projects don’t usually fail because they don’t work, but because the code has become to complex and thereby expensive to maintain. This is not a new insight. Seniority levels are commonly defined by one’s ability to write good code, not code that just works. However, with AI many seem to have forgotten this, and people fully embrace “but it works”. Although among my programmer colleagues it’s actually rare that people forgot about it, it’s management that is seeing dollar signs in their eyes right now. And it wasn’t even easy before to convince them that it’s important to invest into maintainable code, even though that doesn’t always result in direct value being created for the customers.
