it's not just the facial recognition software that is at fault here.. it's at best a tool, but the policing and the courts are to blame. This was based on a picture on a fake ID found in a hotel...as if nobody else could have dropped it...not based on a surveillance photo. At most, when his name came up the police could have questioned him to see if he had an alibi, just as they would question somebody that a witness thought they saw. The judge should have required a lot more evidence for an arrest warrant. this wasn't even at the level of circumstantial evidence.
Meanwhile the police weren't looking for the person who actually committed the crime.
