Edit: to clarify. Im not trying to poo poo your thoughts on this or anything like that. I just find it interesting to think about and wanted to provide an alternate outcome to what seems like a depressive spiraling outlook on the future of humanity. As for the existential rant at the end: isn’t this the end goal utopia? To make all earthly/societal maintenance unnecessary so humans can focus on personal connection, perfecting our physiques/mind, pursuing the fundamental truth of the universe, etc? You’re basically describing a world where we want not for the bottom 2 to 3/5 of Maslows Pyramid are you not? (I was driving so I may have misunderstood) Like yes there will be a crisis of meaning and we could easily descend into limitless hedonism but I prefer to hope for the positive since it’s likely inevitable and won’t happen in my lifetime. The scary part to me is the transitional phase. What does society look like when 70% (arbitrary number) of jobs are done by AI and a portion of the population still has to work while the other portion live off UBI? Does the UBI population live in squalor so the remaining workers aren’t upset over fairness? Are the working class literally forced to work while the UBI class live decent lives? Do we still live under capitalism and how long does that last? Who knows. I think this whole thing is extremely intangible currently so it’s pointless to be optimistic or pessimistic. Although I can understand why you’d be pessimistic, being one of the first jobs to start to be made obsolete and before we even universally consider free school lunches to be a moral good, let alone UBI.
