Every time someone writes that AI is going to do something we know immediately that they probably don't really know what they are talking about. That is because 'AI' is not one thing. It is a huge collection of different algorithms with different abilities and different limitations. The current 'AI' wave will later be understood as just a continuation of computerization of work using a collection of new algorithms to do a collection of new and quite specific things. More people should think critically about this. Our own experiences will show the way. Automated translation that's good, but not reliable and not quite good enough. Automated transcription of speech that's amazing but not good enough to be reliable. Summaries of text that are good, but not good enough because of unreliability. Answers from Copilot etc that are at times helpful but at other times stubbornly irrelevant or wrong. I could go on. Most of these new systems are exploiting statistical patterns but they do not understand what they are reading or extrapolating. They do not build a model of reality and try to establish what is true, what is perhaps true, and what is false.
