Why oh why are we handing the cohesion in society (and quite possibly even the fate of humanity as a whole) to a small group of narcissists running big tech companies? Even before AI, social media has done a number on people’s mental health and the state of democracy in the west. AI will have an even greater destructive potential on our lives.
It is not like developing and deploying AI systems is an inevitable choice. We can say no to all of this. Or at least we can tightly regulate AI.
The Europeans have to endure a lot of ridicule for their cautious approach towards AI. Their AI act may not be perfect — but at least it sets some guardrails for what decisions AI can and cannot make over our lives. This body of legislation must be expanded. And if necessary, the AI ‘hyperscalers’ must be brought under democratic control.
