I think that you are mischaracterizing their argument. AI is a tool, just like any other tool. I think that a camera is a better comparison than digital drawing. Is a photograph less art than a drawing or painting? All you have to do is point and push a button, and maybe playing with some contrast, saturation, and exposure values. Typing in an AI prompt actually takes more work and creativity than photography. I think what a lot of people are against is artists gatekeeping art. My mother and grandfather both have a tremor, and I’ll probably develop one too. Does that mean we can’t make art because we can’t hold a pen or a brush steady? That seems unfair. Not everyone has the skill to make art by hand. Some of us spent math class actually doing math instead of drawing eyes in our notebooks and not paying attention. I personally believe that art is just a human behavior. It’s not about how you do it, it’s about that you do it. Everywhere we spend time as a species we leave behind art. Some of the earliest evidence of human habitation is art. I don’t think you, or anyone, is in a position to dictate what is on isn’t art. I also think that you haven’t spent very much time actually trying to use an AI image generator, or are being intentionally disingenuous about how hard they are to use. I spent two hours wrestling with an AI trying to generate an image of a sword dangling over an office chair, and it just would not do it. This is a challenge that I do not believe you experience when drawing. I also think that AI generated images are best used as a starting point to edit and modify to create what you want with less work but more control over details. If it gives you a hand with too many fingers then you can fix that manually. It can probably be made to automatically do shading on a drawing, or generate line art from a sketch.
