My favourite comparison is the microprocessor revolution in the 1970s. Whole swathes of jobs wiped out in about 5 years. Everything from secretarial work to machinists were obliterated. The average medium to large company would have had whole floors of typists, all women. Much less need for them with “word processors”. Machinist turning parts on a lathe, a highly skilled job. All gone thanks to CNC. There’s many, many other examples. Even shop work changed drastically thanks to automated inventory systems. This is just the latest technology in a long sequence of technological developments going back to the day someone domesticated the mule, replacing folk who tilled farmland with a hoe.
