This is a very thoughtful conversation you are having with us, Bernie. I sense your concern for our people as the development of AI accelerates. This is an important conversation.
AI seems to be developing very fast, so I believe your point is timely. We need to plan quite soon what kind of reality we want to step into.
I think the first step of planning is to be very clear that there are powerful people who do not want us to have any say about what happens to the unimaginable wealth involved in AI. Unless we get money out of politics, I am very much afraid that AI legislation would go the way Medicare for All has gone so far (nowhere), even though the people want it very badly.
My next suggestion is that we get seriously active to get money out of politics. I know that this is almost impossible, but politics needs to be separated from the corruption of money, and we need to fight for this. It is the one issue that is the lynchpin for all others.
It is a very frightening idea that people will no longer be needed once AI assumes the jobs available for humans and does them without pay. What will happen to us ordinary people when we have no work, and no pay, and no jobs will ever be available for humans again?
At first it will probably not involve everyone, so there will be some room for planning each step. I believe you said that many people have been replaced already by AI. I remember that in the writers strike, clauses were put into the union contracts to limit competiton from AI.
We need to go back and include the people who have already been replaced. What are they doing? We need to help them. However things are arrranged, they need to be part of these new developments with the rest of us.
One thing that occurred to me that you may not have considered yet is that without people with paying jobs, no one will be paying payroll taxes and no one will be contributing to the Social Security Trust Fund or Medicare. There is a backlog in the Trust Fund, and many will still be working for awhile, but the Trust fund is low, and Seniors will be in serious trouble.
Everyone needs to be included in the division of wealth from AI. This includes working people, out of work people, retired people, stay at home moms and dads, caregivers for someone in the family, people with limitations, and people unable to care for themselves, such as the seriously ill, the seriously disabled, the seriously elderly, and children.
My desired outcome is a society that is at last not cursed with a mania for productivity at all costs, a society in which people are able to be present in the now moment to whatever they are doing, instead of rushing to do more with no time to spare for delicious ease and peace.
My desired outcome is a society in which people can explore anything of interest to them that is not harmful to others, whether they want to work at this night and day with passion or only as the fancy strikes them.
I envision a vast array of choices to interest people who never or rarely have had time for such pursuits. I can imagine the delight in all the rich possibilities available. These things might be exciting, and they might be scary. People might not know where to turn when they are presented with unlimited opportunities and free time and no existing structure. It could be confusing at first for life to be so different from one's working days.
People could need help to adjust to their new and different life situation. One kind of help would be having mini-experiences in a group of many different possbilities open to them. There could be an orientation course in depth that exposed people to the many things they might want to do with their time. Experience is the best teacher because we discover what we enjoy by trying things.
I suggest we dream of a future world we would love to be part of, and then plan how we could make that future world a reality. Doing this is called brainstorming, or visualizing, or mind mapping, or imagining, or designing.
What is most important is to avoid censorship. Every idea is welcome. The next step after dreaming is clarifying the outcome we desire. What specifically does this brave new world we want look like?
