7:15 Can't get blood from a stone. The only reason I can imagine Midjourney would try to sue to get money is if they think they could get any of that money from someone. Highly unlikely to be the case for most prompters XD I can't really support something like Disney trying to make copyright even stricter than it is. I grew up in an era where Disney was seen as one of the "big bads" responsible for what is essentially eternal copyrights. The more these corporations scoop up in general, the more they have to claim up is down and that *you* are stealing something from *them*. So whatever, I say. Use Nightshade and Glaze if you think it'll help protect your works, and just keep doing your thing regardless. The important part is to carve your niche and make yourself relatively safe from external dangers, regardless of the source. I also personally feel like our original (US) copyright laws were probably the most sensible ones. You had 14 years to leverage your work before it went into the public domain for everyone to make use of. As an artist, even if I were a one-hit wonder, that's plenty of time to get the majority of the juice out of one of my works. There even used to be an online movement to try to get us to return to this many years ago. Unfortunately, since 1989 we've been a signatory to the Berne convention, which has a copyright length of [author's lifespan]+50 years, and corporations can exist in perpetuity. It would be very difficult to change this. The scales aren't exactly tipped in the individual's favor, especially in fast-moving and new creative frontiers. There's definitely a lot of room for differences of opinion on this. P.S. Devices like Nepenthes can be defeated by search engines the "old-fashioned" way -- if a webcrawler goes down a content slop rabbit hole, they basically used to hire a bunch of humans to help determine what was considered deliberate content farming and de-rank it. I imagine that companies which disrespect robots.txt to train AI might not be keen to do this though if it opens them up to legal liability for who decides what criteria is and isn't eligible, specifically regarding copyright. Many of them are already playing fast and loose with the rules.
