As a Software Engineer, I was an early adopter of the AI coding agents (Afraid of getting left behind and becoming defunct), I've used replit, windsurf, cursor, intelliJ AI (Junie)...one thing became very clear, when the project grows too large, the AI forget's details of code and features it generated before and having to fix a bug or make modifications to prior code is frustratingly difficult, you change one thing, the Agent ends up breaking something else. Eventually you realise you wasted weeks trying to build this product that you can't fully maintain (because you didn't write the code yourself), eventually you realise you have to start from scratch and do the dirty work yourself.
The whole process of using AI for coding is painful.
Now I just use the agents to generate unit tests, help with best practices, optimising pieces of code or functionality, on boarding on to new projects, deciphering stacktraces, writing documentation....just not outsourcing the important bits to them.
Overall having used these AI agents and understanding their limitations, has made me less anxious about "being replaced", but I've also noticed one uncomfortable truth, the job market has now shifted in favour of employers. In the past I'd get recruiters reaching out with job opportunities, maybe 6 to 8 times a year...that has dropped to maybe 3-5 opportunities.
