"I think, therefire i exist". A quote that captivated many people, and something really close to what i believe will kind of decode this mystery. I believe ai will never be conscious. To me consciousness is what "freewill" is. The ability to think and not only process or react. Those moments at night where we are in bed, lost in our head, speaking to no one, seeing nothing, listening to nothing. Only thinking. So in other words if ai cannot start processing data by itself without any push by us then it cant be conscious. And even if it will get to that at some point, it will be yet again an illusion, because you can make it process data at all times, and pick topics of data mimicking thought, basing it on a chance based algorithm. But in order to be conscious it shouldnt be based on chance, but actually truly and consciously pick data to process.
Responding to the quote in the beggining of the comment. I dont know what consciousness is, but i know that " to be conscious is to start processing by ourselves. It is to think, not react"
