I love how like people in Altman's position try to dictate or convey that it would somehow be awful if everyone just had a basic income. Everyone SHOULD have a basic income regardless. Do these guys really think most people feel meaning from working a wage slave job? Because from what I've experienced in my life and the people I've been around it actually makes more people depressed because their forced to conform to the system. Universal basic income and AI stepping in to give the human race freedom is our future. I look at AI as unlocking the human race. We as humans all have these big dreams in our heads of solving cancer, finding ways to live longer, traveling space, having a separate life in a virtual world, surpassing human limits becoming super human, etc. All of these things could potentially be possible with AI and we should all embrace that. If it ends up being our downfall then so be it but the only way corporate America is going to allow its people to be free is if they have a substitute to come in and fill those roles that we don't want to fill and that is AI. I'm pretty sure that Jeff who works at the gas station or Amazon isnt going to miss his slave job and it's certainly not going to take away meaning from his life. People are so odd to equate working a 9-5 job you hate and survival to meaning.
