Unit echelon indicators today:
• I — Company / Battery / Troop
• II — Regiment / Group
• III — Battalion
• X — Brigade
• XX — Division
• XXX — Corps
• XXXX — Army
So in today’s system:
✔ Battalion = III
✔ Regiment = II
That’s the modern, correct interpretation.
Why this matters
A lot of older manuals, WWII diagrams, and even video games still use the older U.S. convention where II = battalion, which is why people get mixed up. But if you’re talking about current doctrine, the answer is unambiguous.
