I'm a software engineer with over 20 years experience. For a year now I rarely write code. I help the AI agent plan out implementation using the requirements of the assignment in a phased approach. At each phase I review, test, and work with it to correct any bugs or architectural mistakes. Before PR, I do a final review before I put my name on its work. This has actually gone very well. But it's not perfect. The chat I was working in today went so badly as the agent seemed to corrupt just about every other file it touched. I renamed that agent Gilligan. I feel like engineers will hardly do much coding going forward, but will still be needed to direct the AI so the codebase is well built/maintained and the features are bug free and complete.
