The idea that they can or will reduce the accident rate to zero just because they have a driverless truck is ridiculous. If these trucks were in a completely sealed-off roadway, essentially a tunnel, where the path, environment, and all other conditions were controlled, you might be able to bring the rate down significantly, but even then, zero would still be unattainable. Tires blow out, and other mechanical factors will occur that cause a loss of control. It's inevitable. So, one of their BS reasoning points to sell this crap to the American public is just that, BS. It will not make our roads safer. The loss of jobs in this country, safety aspects aside, is also going to be astounding. As many commentators and persons interviewed in this story attested, there is no driver shortage, and never has been. There has always been a shortage of fair compensation. If you started paying drivers the money they deserve for the hours and hardships that truck driving entails, then you would not have a driver shortage. Put the salary for a cross-country truck driver at any of these major trucking companies at $125k to $150k and treat them like the valuable commodity that they are, and you will see people lining up for these jobs. So, again, another BS excuse from these ultra-wealthy tech billionaires who are in cahoots with the ultra-wealthy corporations who stand to profit more from cutting drivers out of the chain. If we as Americans do not wake up and demand accountability from our elected leaders for the actions of these corporations that are shoving this so-called technology down our throats, by the time we realize what has happened, it will be too late. These driverless trucks, ride-share vehicles, taxis, and any other automated technology unleashed on public roadways and thoroughfares should be banned. It's not safe, it's not good for the majority of people in this country, and there is no reason for it to be allowed beyond enriching the pockets of a few already wealthy individuals who care only about themselves and their bottom line.
