I really like NDGT, but he is really naive about AI. Sure, when big jumps in disruptive technology have occurred, people who lost work generally found work, but often times it wasn't work that was as good. If you were a machinist for a car company, and robots not only put you out of a job, but did the same for other machinists, you end up competing with them over fewer machinist jobs. And AI is already making cashier jobs more scarce. There's R&D to have robots cook food at restaurants. If we get to the point where we can't even get a job flipping burgers at McDonald's, what kind of jobs will be available? With so many out of work, what will wages look like. There's a good chance we're fucked. Like others have mentioned AI can be wonderful if it works on all our behalf, but it looks like it will likely be used mostly to serve the rich. We damn well better find a way to avoid that.
