People are misunderstanding the argument here. It's astonishing how many people justify the theft of hard work due to its "advancing of society". AI Art companies are not trying to advance society, they are trying to advance their own profits. And even if they were doing it for some noble cause of "progress", who cares? The apt comparison, whether anyone likes it or not, is slavery. Not any particular historic brand of slavery, but uncompensated work for someone else's profit. Slavery. In this case the slavery is "diffused" among millions. OTOH anyone who posts their work publicly on the internet had to foresee that something like this could one day happen. You made your work publicly available with the hope of potential human exposure, and you got it. As you did that, YouTube profited, Facebook profited, Twitter profited, ISP's profited. All got clicks for your user generated content. These companies don't produce. Your work helping digital profiteers advance themselves was part of the bargain the moment you posted it to try and obtain your "likes". The idea of your art being infused into a giant searchable digital database/generator wasn't just a possibility, it was inevitable. Still there are many things that need to be ironed out and often it takes something like this to reshape an industry. Napster and its downfall helped kill the CD and create streaming. I don't know where this goes from here.
