I'm going to go heterodox with a lot of the comments here. I don't see the consumer economy collapsing entirely nor everything else with it...not for everyone that is. You can see the following scenario beginning to take shape right now; the people who hold assets (the 10%) will likely keep something resembling an economy going although the fundamentals will slowly not apply anymore much as we're seeing now. You can already observe this taking place with over 40% of consumption being supported by the upper 10% and sales of luxury goods booming. Fiat currency will be replaced with digital. Central banks will disappear. There will be a world currency. More and more, anyone with assets will have their own separate, almost closed loop economy while the masses languish for a few decades on UBI as their population slowly dwindles away due to Mouse Utopia like conditions. The overpopulated dystopian sci-fi scenario will never happen. The 10% will continue into a Elysium or Peripheral like future and merge with AI. What comes of that, WTF knows, but it's safe to say that humanity will be unrecognizable by the end of the century except for the also likely Luddite like communities which will become like zoos for the highly altered hybrids. Personally, I'll be happy to live in a small village zoo and be studied by the hybrids. Who knows? Maybe there will be protected status for people like me. Endangered species act anyone? Thoughts?
