Mass layoffs aren't happening because of AI. AI contributes, sure, but it's largely used as an excuse. Mass layoffs are happening simply because of miss-management and overhiring during the pandemic, forcing the big tech corps to begin layoffs, and then subsequently discovering the "hire to fire" culture not only lowers their expenses drastically, but the stocks go up and stay up. It's not AI. It's greed and complete incompetence at the leadership level.
