Why do you think that the ultra-rich like Bill Gates talk about how we need to reduce population? In their ideal world, the human population is only around 500 million. They don't need to worry about the masses taking basic income to live subsistence level lives. Automation and AI provide what they need to support their lifestyles with a minimal number of workers to support the industry that drives that. Sure, absolute profit numbers are down, but that starts to become irrelevant when they are able to have full access to everything available. They want the minimum human population that will support their needs at the lowest possible cost.
