Your ideas are already lost causes. Sanderson won’t give permission under any circumstances for his works to be used for training? They are absolutely going to make an app like Stable Diffusion for writing which has a basic “backbone model” but which can have “sidecar models” bolted to it. Then anyone with a good GPU can train up a sidecar based on your writing and then start sharing it across the internet. There will be sidecar models for every author. So your principled stance is just a lost cause.
And really…you’re fighting a meaningless battle. There are structural realities which just keep competition out. Who cares if someone can write a great book in your style? How many great books exist that don’t get traction? How many old books in old homes that don’t even have covers anymore would be books people LOVE…but they won’t because they will never know they exist?
That’s the throttle. Anyone who thinks they are going to just pop out books from a machine like ice from an ice cube tray and money is going to flow in is an idiot. They will just disappear into a black hole of competition. You will need to “do something” to get your works noticed. And by “do somethjng” I mean a LOT of work. Essentially a full-on part time job of self promotion.
Do you think pop tart AI authors want to do 20 hours of work per week getting their stuff noticed enough to basically earn a part time income from their AI book sales? No. They will do the mental math and realize it isn’t worth it.
Only the people willing to self promote a LOT will sell anything. The rest will just disappear as if they never existed. They are competition…but they are not “real” competition. They are not a threat. And the number of Ai authors willing to put in the self promotion work? They will be about as much of a force in the marketplace as regular “newcomer” competitors that have entered the space every year since the beginning.
This stuff cannot be stopped. But it won’t matter from a practical perspective. Because it’s just not as great a threat as people think. It’s more of a mental burden for those who rank very low on the “mental toughness” scale. People who are 3’s and 4’s who basically just want to work in a corner of their room and never do the hard work of self marketing…and are in anguish because they always believed the lie that “the quality of their work” alone would enable them to rise to a full time income… those people are doomed. But they were always doomed anyway. Because that dream was always nothing but self delusion. Does it happen? Sure. As often as people win the lottery. Winning the lottery and becoming a full time author/artists on the quality of your work alone are both equally likely to happen.
