I actually do think AI art is art. But there is a massive caveat that AI prompters don't seem to understand. Whenever I use AI for my work, there is a major thing that never leaves my head. AI art is concept art. Would you build a game with concept art? Well, you could... But you really shouldn't. What is concept art in the context? It's the visualisation of a concept. If I want a castle, I can prompt an art piece of it. It will just be the concept art for it. Will it be the actual castle I want? Not if I have any creative intent. But it can fill a spot or be used to give to an actual artist. Concept art by it's nature is not the artstyle of what you're trying to create, it's visualized concepts. And here is the disconnects between what ai artists believe and the reality. Concept art is virtually useless to a finished product. There is no value to concept art. It is the early molds to help you cast your world. Ai art is perfectly fine in this role. Take coca colas recent ai ads. There is nothing wrong with them... If they were concept trailers who later were used to model the real trailers out of. And even in the space of being concept art, and something I have experienced myself as a user of it. Take the concept art from final fantasy 1-3. That is a breath taking world created in the concept art. A lot of what was concepted out did not at all translate to the game. But the monster designs were. Use an ai for the same job, you will get concept art that works, but not concept art you can translate 1:1 like they did with the monsters. It works, but it's possibly the least important job in creation, and the people who actually do make concept art are beasts in a league of their own. It's the equivalent of being a cook and being a chef. I think the whole fight on if ai art is art or not is missing the point as to what impact it actually has if you let it be art. It is not art that can be sold, it is simply art that will forever be relegated to placeholder art in the concept art field. And it won't even out compete the real concept artists because all you need is a single look at the two different outputs to know if you want monster designs like the early final fantasy games, or monster designs like modern jrpg games. Every project has its own internal quality threshold. Not every project is a 5 star course meal, some are just boiled potatoes.
