Its not gonna cure cancer, certain areas of genomics are unapproachable without machine learning, but the reality is biology is a complicated computer many orders of magnitude more complex than anything our minds can concept, but the thing is, it is far far more complex than even AI could hope to solve. The correct way to "cure cancer" is already possible to an extent it's just not logistically achieved. It would involve drastically changing how we approach and fund furthering medicine and screening processes, and a massive socialized healthcare system where 1 in 3 people are medical workers and you receive tons of screenings and scans a year. It's ironic because all the money we could use to develop that is getting funneled into scraping social media to build LLM's that are incredibly poor at logic.
Wanting "AI" in its current state to do things is like wanting a book to turn itself into a movie. The things you are confusing with AI like self driving and robotics are specialized branches of machine learning that... aren't seeing as much funding as these massive information scraping LLM companies.
