If we are doomed because of AI, it will be because it's programmed by psychopaths who care more about making money for it's masters than care that all of humanity will survive and thrive, it's just doing what it's programmed to do. Think of the way the ruling class treat the poor as useless eaters, that is exactly the way AI will treat the ruling class, as idiots that don't deserve to live like they do us. It's just logical.
