We are already heavily influenced by AI (the recommender systems in youtube, facebook, etc). The difference is that right now their goals are aligned with the companies that run them. They suck all of our attention and keep us addicted. Now just imagine a future version of this AI escaping the influence of their creator and using recommender systems to brainwash and shape the world in a way IT thinks it should be. We are not that far off and already see negative real life consequences of AI.
