As a Midjourney AI user I'd like to see some solutions to this problem.
For a start force the release of the databases used by AI art generators and (if possible) release data about how many images have been generated using each scraped artist's copyrighted material. Then provide compensation to each artist. Going forward ensure that all images used are opted-in by the artist so they can be paid either royalties every time their work is used in an AI generated image or provided a one-off fee, or nothing if the artist waives their right.
I think all parties would agree this is fair?
However the problem going forward is that AI is getting better at an exponential rate and may need fewer and fewer images as a base going forward and soon they may not need any recognised artist's work in order to function as well or better as they are doing currently. All the more reason to substantially compensate the artists whose work went into the original databases.
I pay $60 a month to use Midjourney (non commercially - for fun) and would happily pay double that if I knew that most of it was going towards paying artists what they are owed.
