We should also emphasize that it’s not the capability of AI as a technology that obsoletes people but the convenient excuse it offers. The reality is that we already have workplace phenomena like the Pareto effect, over hiring, and bs jobs. These unfortunately always make people available for pending layoffs without dramatically impacting business operations. AI chatbots are not automated. They need an operator, a promoter, and someone to figure out what to query and how to use the output. It’s going to make things go faster for certain tasks but also require more verification work. It’s also going to increase the volume of work (because low level implementation details are getting easier to complete) so it’s easier to move on to the next thing in the queue. Demands aren’t going to disappear suddenly. And my 6th sense tells me there will be several downstream consequences to adopting AI including people “losing” skill. For example, children bypassing learning and as a result not developing foundational skills. They will have a dependence and addiction to chatbots, lose out on social aspects of learning. The general public will realize AI isn’t some magical solution to everything, the hype will die, and people who were unjustly let go will be needed again.
