With all due respect, I think that there are real philosophical and analytic problems with the Turing test. For one, the ability to discriminate between a person and a computer is highly subjective, and could, in theory, be affected by qualities such as the intelligence, diligence, or bias of the person doing the discrimination.
Second, on further reflection, I have become convinced that the ability to determine whether the entity on the "other end of the terminal" is human or AI is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for determining whether that entity is sentient or not.
Consider: it is possible that the AI on the other end could be sentient, but also honest, and forthrightly declare that it is not a human being. This indicates that merely being able to distinguish one from the other is not actually sufficient to determine that an unidentified interlocutor is not sentient.
Conversely, consider that it is very easy to distinguish between, say, a dog and a person in terms of their ability to respond to interactions. However, it is also fairly clear that dogs are nonetheless sentient beings; this indicates that it is not necessary for a being to be able to mimic human interaction in order to determine that it is actually sentient.
