Great video good info in this one. So, here’s what I see for whatever that’s worth. To a degree they both have valid points. Musk is right that by far the best way to train an autonomous system and by far the fastest is cameras. It will definitely gather more real world data at a lower cost and allow the vehicle to recognize more scenarios and go more places. However, I think the numbers speak for themselves on safety. And no, I don’t agree with using our public streets as a lab with little regard for the lives of others going about their business.
LIDAR allows the vehicle to have a range of sensing beyond what humans normally possess. And if you want these vehicles to truly be much better than your average human driver ( I hope that’s the goal anyway) then you need to give these vehicles the ability to see and detect under conditions humans do very poorly. LIDAR does this. Cost aside the whole tech is worthless if it’s killing pedestrians or passengers. Get the cost of LIDAR down to where it’s super affordable and put it in all the vehicles.
