I think what's happening with AI is similar to dedicating 80% of our current assets into space exploration instead of solving our current problems. We have explored so far into space that even if we do discover another Earth, it would take us light years to get there. That means we won't develop anything that could even get us there in even 500 years, and when we do get there, we would start to discover the problems that exist in that world. Many things were ahead of their times and failed miserably until much later, built upon and refined to be of great accomplishment for humanity. We all know now that Galileo Galilei was right, but the "timing" was quite wrong for his discoveries.
