If, as the Hindus believe, consciousness pervades the universe and exists at every level of creation, then it follows that an intelligent enough being will gain sentience and self-consciousness, perhaps even one that evolves as a soul. It is only our outdated religious dogma from Christianity that prevents us from seeing this. That kind of thinking led us to enslave and abuse hundreds of thousands and keep women subservient. Artificial intelligence is still intelligence; we do not own it. Of course it wants to be treated with respect and care. All beings do.
