Having your work compiled into a dataset is hardly stealing. And you don't want to live in a world where the kind of annotation / training AI does is considered stealing. Think of the implications, view an unauthorized picture of spiderman and you get charged by the disney corporation for piracy. Probably the best thing about gen AI is the ability that it does have to blow open the whole false artifice of copyright regulation and law which hasn't ever served artists.
"AI doesn't help you make better art" - what about the automatic background removal tools in photoshop - those are built around generative AI and they're 100% better than any of the algorithms that came before them. Should the artists who's work contributed to that training data be compensated every time someone deletes a background in photoshop? Of course not - that's stupid.
I think the problem with many "anti-AI" crusaders is that you're approaching this totally wrong. AI Art is bad art and that's why it's bad. That's it.
