AI may not replace most engineers today, but it is certainly on that path. Recently it achieved top rank on the Putnam math competition, and gold standard in the international math olympiad.
It has hallucination issues, but it just needs to be more accurate than most humans, to replace most human cognitive labour.
There are other AI architectures being developed that use the World Model instead of language. Instead of prediction of text, they predict the state of the simulated world. There are other architectures being explored that may lead to another ChatGPT moment. These innovations may be the key to AGI.
I wish this wasn't the future, but this is the future we're headed to.
